I got back to Israel a month ago. During the time spent on the road and later on visiting my family, I was thinking a lot about where am I headed in life (mostly career-wise).

A little background

3 Years ago I’ve decided to start going my own way. I had no idea if it’s going to be difficult or easy. I just knew that I had to do something “different”. Career change wasn’t an option, I pretty much enjoyed what I did (which was developing software).

I tried to get a degree and although some classes were interesting, it mostly felt like a waste of time – trying to get a degree to complement my existing proficiencies where it should be the other way around. Reading the book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” go me rethinking about the whole idea behind formal education, also the fact that I had a full time job at the time didn’t really help.

Next try was freelancing. I quit my full time job and started taking freelance jobs. Up until that point, all the projects that I participated in were enterprise level systems, usually composed of multiple teams with at least 3 developers per team. This have me a good idea of how to organize tasks and work. Doing it for myself really helped a lot but the hardest thing was sticking to the plan. Being part of a team, either leading it or being led, you know you have a specific task and you stick to it. Doing it solo means you have to wear both hats – I learned that it takes a lot of discipline to do that.

During my freelance career I had 2 stages (so far).

The first stage was the entrepreneurship stage. I had some ideas of my own but non were fully developed. I decided to partner up with other people and I opened 2 companies. One was called AfricanInk – it deals with online albums and the other one was an out-sourcing company called Gravitech. The idea behind out-sourcing which was taking projects and doing them didn’t appeal much to me by itself. It was just like being employed by several companied for less of the benefits with more pressure and stress. It did give me flexibility with my time but at the same time it was more stressful. It did force me to do the business side of a company for once which was chasing projects, dealing with contract and trying to asses risks and costs. On the long run it’s a very useful skill.

The second stage was the self employment stage. On the first company my part was nearly finished (I was in charge of the software development) so it freed up some time on my schedule. I left the partnership from the second company because at the time I felt that just doing another project after project without any set long term goals to the company wasn’t the way to go. I took on 1 long term project (it was billed by the hour) and I decided to fill the rest of my time with doing pet projects that might some day develop into commercial products. At the same time I wasn’t sure that this was the way to go so I also kept doing other freelance projects. At some point I took another long term project and another long term project and had no time left to work on my pet projects. The remaining time that I had left was gone some how – it wasn’t much, I assume several hours per week and it went to life related tasks (such as paying the bills).

During that time, I didn’t feel like I’m living to my full potential. I wasn’t advancing in the companies that I worked with because I wasn’t working there full time. And I wasn’t advancing my career as a freelancer because I had no idea what I wanted to advance. I just knew that doing small project after small project wasn’t for me and to take big projects you need to have a proven track record as a freelancer which I didn’t have (and I didn’t try to get one because I didn’t know if that was what I wanted to do).

All in all, as time moved on, I felt more and more like wasting my time. Something had to change!

So I packed my things and decided to travel. Which was something that I wanted to do for a long time but didn’t have the time or the partner to do it with.

Looking back, I think the whole 3 years were a continuous search but I never really stopped to think about what I was searching for.

The change

To get the right answer you have to ask the right question. I had no idea what the right question was but I have spent the last 3 month thinking about it. I came up with no results. There were too many things I wanted to achieve but I just didn’t know how to achieve them. At the time I had several different paths that I could go with. Each had its own pros and cons and I couldn’t decide on the way to go. I just knew that I had to make a decision and go with it all the way.

Then out of no where, in the middle of the night, I had an epiphany. God did not reveal himself to me but I had finally found some answers. The question was “What path should I take?”. That was the wrong question. When it changed to “How should I decide what path to take?”, that’s when I had my epiphany.

Never underestimate the power of the written word! I sat down and wrote all my current choices, listed all the pros and cons for each one. In order to be fully satisfied with whatever decision I make, I also wrote down how am I going to overcome the cons (be whatever they were).

It wasn’t something new, all those things kept running in my head this whole time but writing them down really gets you to focus. You suddenly see the real differences between each possible option. Things that in my head seemed minor suddenly get a huge weight when compared directly to the alternatives. On the other hand, things that seemed big and complicated, suddenly seem manageable.

After I finished writing down the list (it turned out to be quite long), I went ahead to set short term tasks to be able to come to a decision. Suddenly a big life affecting decision comes down to a short list of doable tasks. It really takes the weight off and simplifies the decision.

Also knowing that I covered some of the big hurdles beforehand gives me more peace and quiet later down the road.

Current state

The path that I chose to take which is also the one that I’m most comfortable with was entrepreneurship. That’s the thing I enjoy doing the most – bootstrapping and building things from the ground up. It’s a hard task to innovate but I decided to pursuit my own ideas and dreams. Some ideas are worthy of a business plan behind them and some are just there to satisfy my own curiosity or selfish needs. I’m also on the lookout for other ideas worthy of my time. In between I keep doing freelance projects and consultation work but just to finance myself.

I feel fatigued after so much time moving around. Deep inside I want to get this over with but not really.
From Chicago we more or less “raced” to NY. It took us 7 days to go through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, upstate NY, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
We saw the Niagara Falls, Boston and New Haven.

First stop was the Niagara Falls which is in upstate NY. Along the way in Indiana/Ohio we saw Amish people. It was just like in the movies, dressed in all black and white with this weird beard. They were riding in black carriages with horses along the road.
Ohio was also the place that I got a flat tire the second time. This time I was equipped with a tire fixing kit which helped me to get to the nearest shop to replace the tire (unfortunately, it appears that they wont take the liability to patch a sports bike tire).

Upstate NY seems to be full of vineyards aswell and we chose to take a route that goes along them. We usually prefer the 2 lane back country roads instead of the freeways. The scenery is better and in this case the smell of the grapes was intoxicating. I can still smell it in the back of my head.

The Niagara Falls were huge but not as I had imagine them… I imagined something a little more impressive. I guess that the Canadian side is better (so they say) but Roi got his passport wet and we didn’t want to risk it not being able to return to the states.

Vermont and New Hampshire were beautiful but I just drove through them so I got no pictures…

Next we arrived at Boston. Boston is beautiful, very different from other places. It had a certain vibe to it. I stayed with my cousin Nataly and her family.
She showed us around MIT where she does her research. I took some pictures there to prove that I was there.

We went next to Harvard and took the tour. The guide was a student there, a loud one. The tour was fun.

In Boston we visited a park that had a little disturbing fountain

There were kids playing there…

When we finished with Harvard and Boston, we moved on to New Haven to see Yale and visit Roi’s friend Tamar.

We stayed with her for the night and the next day we continued on to NY.

Our ways were separated when we left to NY city, I was staying with my relatives and he was staying with his.

Seeing all these universities made me want to get a degree. But just for a moment.

The two hours drive to NYC took me 3 hours instead of 2 because I was stupid enough to drive without fuel! So in the middle of the road, the engine just stopped and I had to roll it to the side and go look for fuel. I was lucky that it happened 5 miles from my destination and it was in the middle of the city so there were garages and gas stations scattered. I just had to walk a bit to get gas and lend from someone a container (I encountered one nasty mechanic that more or less shooed me from his shop and one nice mechanic that lent me the container and asked if I had learned my lesson).
Needless to say that it was a shitty weather and I prayed that it wont start pouring. The sky were dark gray.

I guess that the majority of the journey is concluded. I’m staying in NY for a while longer and then I need to “race” down south to Miami for new years eve.
Looking back, I think that I should have stayed a while longer in certain places but perhaps I need first to recharge for a while. It’s not easy being on vacation

I’m almost in NY so I should REALLY get this posted!

Chicago has been the first time after a month that we actually stopped moving.
We arrived on Friday and it was SO humid, like 80% and it was around 90°F. It was disgusting, I was sweating like a pig. But then we arrived at my relatives’ house, Jacky and Gayle, which I haven’t seen in a long time. Later on I also met my cousin Steven which also lives in Chicago and I didn’t see in quite a while.
It was very exciting to see my family after such a long time (to me anyway, I don’t know about them).
It was also Friday night so we had Kidush. After a month on the road, it felt a little bit like home. We went out afterwards, Roi and I. We went downtown to a pub and everything was sticky due to the weather and we were tired from the ride so we went back quickly.

We originally planned to stay 2 days or so but then we discovered that it was labor day weekend (meaning a long weekend with activities) and we thought that it might also be a good time to service our bikes (by that time, we had done 6000 miles already).
All in all, we spent there a week and barely felt it. We were having a blast.
Occasionally we stayed with Steven which lives downtown when we were too drunk to drive back.

The first day after we arrived it was cloudy and raining so it wasn’t all that pleasant out side but we still went out the whole family and took a bike (the non motorized kind) trip down the lake shore which was very fun. It’s been a while since I’ve ridden one and surprise surprise, it was like riding a bicycle.

Luckily, the following days were amazing! Beautiful weather, not too hot, not too humid, not too cloudy. Perfect for sightseeing.
We went out to see a Cubs game with Steven and Steve his friend. The game was boring but the experience was fun. It’s pretty much hanging out, talking, drinking and eating.

At nights we went out in the city, hang out with my cousin and his friends, going to places packed with people which was a huge difference from the previous month when we went out. Lots of fun!

I did the usual tourist stuff…

Saw “the bean”

Didn’t really get it…

Went to see the city from up the Sears tower. It was nice.

Stayed for a while near the fountain from Married with Children.

And lastly we went to the science and industry museum.

On the last day I discovered that a friend of mine, Michelle, lives like a mile away from where we stayed so I’ve found the time to meet up with her at the last moment. Too bad it was just at the last moment but it was fun regardless.

On the way out, we passed through the Baha’i temple.

I liked the ones in Haifa better.

All in all, Chicago was a refreshing change with lots of people that I know and finally a big city as opposed to all the “pop. 1000″ towns along the way.
It was also the beginning of the end. We had finally reached the populated areas.

Now I know why people say “it’s a dry heat”… until mid south Dakota, we had very little humidity and it was a pleasure driving at 90°F with the jackey on. As we approached Chicago, humidity levels kept rising and it became harder and harder to drive with the jacket on. Even on lower tempratures. Now I miss that dry heat.

Leaving Montana, on our way to south Dakota we had one last stop to do in Wyoming, its a place called the devils tower. It a 400 meter stone tower in the middle of nowhere. And it’s not man made.
It’s quite impressive.

Yes, thats a person climbing that rock in the last picture.

We spent the night in a small town that borders SD called new castle. This was the cheapest motel we’ve ever stayed in and it wasn’t bad at all. The owner was very enthusiastic about showing around and she took out a map and started giving us tips regarding where to drive and what to do. She told us about the jewel cave and a place called crazy horse mountain besides mount Rushmore. We also enjoyed a thunderstorm show. It was a good thing that it happened at night after we were safely in the room.

The Jewel cave. There aren’t really any jewels in that cave, just alot of calcium in various forms. Its also a very large cave – about 250km but not too deep, just 100m.

The Crazy Horse mountain is not related to a cabaret show. It’s a bunch of Indian, sorry, native americans who decided that they want to have a leader carved on a mountain as well. It’s quite an ambitious project. So far they have been able to carve only the head and they’ve been doing that for the past 80 years. I really hope that they’ll complete it soon. It seems very promising. They want to make this area a native Americans center. I just hope it will still be relevant when they finish it.

When we finished with that, we went passed mount Rushmore, saw that they charge 10 dollars for parking and we moved on. I don’t see the point in paying so much just to see heads carved on stone.

We went through an area called the bad lands. It really looked like Badlands, I wish I had pictured it.
That was also the point where we had an encounter with the police. It seems we were driving a little too fast. The let us go eventually with a verbal warning. I guess it was because we’re foreigners.

Then nothing special happened for the last 2 days. Just driving and driving. The same scenery. Field after field. Some are green some are yellow but pretty much the same.
We went through south Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. On the way we crossed the Mississippi and it huge.

At the edge of SD we stayed in a city called Sioux Falls and we went into a motorcycles shop to get Roi some new gloves. It seems that it was a Victory motorcycles dealership. We never heard of that brand but the owner was very nice, we chatted for a while and he showed us something amazing with the Victory motorcycle.
This is the motorcycle:

The he removed the side stand and dropped it on the floor. We were shocked. He was amused.

That’s as low as it will fall.

Its also very easy to pick up.

Now we’re in Chicago for a few days to see the city. We’re staying at some relatives of mine and we’re soon about to do kidush. It’s nice to see some family and stay in the same place after so long.

Note: The above was written a week ago. Chicago will probably have a separate post.

and a touch of Montana.

It started out as plain and boring but soon developed into a beautiful country with varied scenery.

We spent the first night in Casper, the second largest city with a population of 55,000. We are so used to being in small towns (no more than 5000 people) that this really felt like a big city. But still small nonetheless.
We decided to catch a movie, we saw “the return of the planet of the apes”. It sucked, don’t see it. Takes too much time to reach the action.
We had our first breakfast in a 50′s style diner it was nice. I forgot to picture it.

The next day we continued to Yellowstone. Basically we saw that we still have time when we left Colorado so we decided to to stray from our route and go to Yellowstone.
On our way, we stopped at a small town called Dubois. As we’re walking down the main street a fellow biker saw us and started talking to us with a HEAVY western accent. We could barely understand him so we just nodded. I think he mentioned something about loose gravel on the road up ahead which prevented him from going further. Eventually, the next day we encountered that loose gravel but it was passable with care. I’m getting ahead of myself here.
After that encounter it was already getting dark so we decided to camp. It was also raining so we had to do everything fast.
The camp was in Shoshone forest and the view was amazing.

The mosquitoes thought so too. We had to be extra careful when opening the tent entry, they were everywhere.
There are constant warnings regarding bears so we just disposed of our food and prayed that a bear wouldn’t come to hug us.
When we woke up, it was practically freezing, the temps were at about 4°c we quickly packed our stuff and left.

Next stop was Yellowstone. It seems that the park is huge. On the map is doesn’t seem so big. Not until you start reading the small prints which state the distances between spots. I think that the main roads in the park add up to at least 200 miles. We drove a 100 of them.

First waypoint was the geysers. Upon entering the arareayou first see “old faithful” with hundreds of other people. I think it’s because he never fails and always erupts.

A walk around the park displays verity of other geysers with beautiful shapes.

We actually had the chance to witness an eruption of one of them that occurs once every few days. It can reach upto 200 feet.

Ours was “only” 30 feet.
I accidentally stood with the camera in video mode in the direction of the wind so I was soaked with water and smelled of sulfur.

Next we decided to drive around the park and head towards a town called Cody to watch a rodeo.
On the way, we encountered herds of bisons. They were so close to the road.
One of them even decided to cross it while we were there.

Those beasts are huge!
We actually had numerous of occasions where wildlife decided to cross the road while we were driving.

After that refreshing encounter we head out to Cody to watch the rodeo. It appears that it was an amateur rodeo but it was still nice.
When we entered, some clown (literally a clown) asked us where we were from and then when the show started he announced some of the foreign countries that were there. A total of 14 foreign countries were there in the audience but he first called Israel! And we cheered. We also weren’t the only Israelis there. It was quite the surprise.

In the motel, our neighbors were 3 Canadians who displayed great knowledge in Israeli wars. Luckily they love us
Later on we encountered then along the road. It was cool, we waved at each other and chatted at the stops.

The day after, we decided to take a route which “every motorcyclist must do if he travels the states”. It’s called beartooth pass. It was a real nice scenic drive with beautiful twisty roads and amazing mountain peaks (I have a knack for mountain peaks).

Again we encountered a freezing rain.
This is it before it reached us. We couldn’t outrun it

The route ends in Montana so we spent the night there. We ate in a local steakhouse. The food was amazing and they even gave us free samples because we were out of the country. They were really nice.

As time goes by, we form these little rules. We decided to do our best to eat in local restaurants and not the big networks (although we do occasionally sin but rarely). The same goes for motels. It helps to keep the small businesses alive and besides, the hosts are usually nicer because they own the place and really like doing what they do.

Next on the list is South Dakota and a long boring ride to the east.

Here are some more images.

… driving through small towns forces us into a routine. I’m used to eat whenever I’m hungry but here you simply can’t get anything to eat after 9pm.

After Utah, we entered Colorado and spent the night at Grand Junction which was basically a big city (relatively speaking). I hate to admit it but after moving constantly through small towns, it was nice to finally see a mall.
Before we left in the morning l, I’ve replaced my tire. The Guy that patched it in Utah did a terrible job and I just didn’t want to worry about it anymore.

Colorado was very mountainous, it has the rocky mountains (some of them). We began our ride towards Aspen and then we kept on climbing to the top. Along the way, everything is green and with beautiful landscape.

Every once in a while you see houses along the rivers. All that we could do is just envy them but just in the summer. I wouldn’t want to live under 3m of snow.

We began our day with a small hike, we thought it would be good to practice some walking techniques – we’ll probably need it after we finish our journey.
We went along a trail and then heard the noise of a nearby river and decided to stray from the trail onto the river. It was a bad decision, we reached the river and found mosquitos, tons of them. We took a quick picture (which didn’t come out too good) and moved on the another trail that actually crosses a river. We then took a break there and returned to our bikes.

I guess the river is bigger during spring…

Along the way up we started to see people camped along the road and it got denser and denser as we moved along. It appears that this road hosts a bicycle race the next day and it’s going to be close so we were very lucky to get through. Other than that, I felt like a winner with people cheering for me along the road…

We spent the night at Leadville, 10,000 feet above sea level.

At night we decided to take a walk to the town center to eat something. It was a mile walk and it was the hardest mile I’ve ever walked. I could barely breath. At that moment I discovered that I don’t do well at high altitudes.

We kept on climbing and reached a top, where it was so serene and we then saw a bunch of Elks grazing and everything around was so quiet and they looked so peaceful.

Suddenly a storm cloud formed above in a matter of seconds. We saw a lightning bolt strike something like a 100 feet away from us. It sounded like a big explosion and it disturbed their peace, the elks got on their feet and looked around startled. We got on our bikes and started rolling. The rain was getting stronger and stronger and the temperatures dropped rapidly, from around 16°c to around 4°c, the rain was freezing and turned into a hail. Our hands were freezing as well.
Luckily there was a visitor center nearby so we took shelter from the storm and took some pictures with the icy view along the way.

When we got of the mountain we spent the night in a town called Loveland. Make you wonder about the name.

Since we have time, we decided to head north to Wyoming, to Yellowstone.

Canyons, a nice Jewish nomad, an angry lady and a flat tire.

We started from St. George, a nice town in Utah, it’s pretty close to the Nevada border. We drove from there to Bryce Canyon through Zion national park. Honestly, it didn’t capture my heart. Zion was pretty but nothing breath taking.

We moved on to Bryce canyon which was better, it has these big columns called hoodoos that were formed from corrosion(?!) And generally a nice landscape.

It was nice looking but we were both tired for some reason so we decided to head to the campground to setup camp.

After taking a short hike around the park (it was still pretty early), some old guy pulled next to us and asked if he can pinch up a tent next to us (here the campgrounds are very organized, each one has his own lot with space for his vehicle and you pay for that). He offered to pay for it also. He was stuck there without a place to sleep, the campground was full. We agreed since we were in his position a while ago and it’s not a nice place to be in.
He was a nice encounter, a chatty guy. He travels the US alot with his dog and he just got back from a 7 days trip on a raft in the Colorado River. He is around 60, apparently Jewish (so he says) and named Bruce, with planty of life experience. He shared with us alot of information regarding places to visit and his own experience.
When the night came, we walked out of the campground to look at the sky, there’s no city, no light nearby and it was amazing, I never thought there were so many stars.
Bruce is also into astronomy so he gave us a quick lesson regarding the north star, how to spot and what it means.

The next morning we drove out towards an area called the Capitol Reef, it’s another Canyon. I don’t remember if it was impressive. From there we had around 160 miles to get to the next town, and the road was amazing. At one point we drove above the Colorado River, above a Canyon and it was impressive.

It was also the first time we encountered rain. We had to travel on mountains and it was the first time I could see clearly the whole area and I could spot the rainy regions. This was an amazing picture as well.

I must mention that most of the time we are on an elevated plain, at around 5000 feet at the lowest point.

In the middle of the canyons, in the middle of nowhere, I had a flat tire! The nearest town behind us was 60 miles and the nearest town ahead of us was 70 miles. There was no phone reception, no nothing. We were lucky to travel together because we just continued with Roi’s motorcycle to find a phone to call from. We traveled 20 miles and reached a deserted inn with a big sign outside saying “CLOSED. No trespassing”. We went in regardless. I was against the idea but Roi insisted. I guess he didn’t have the image of a man running after us with a shotgun, yelling “get the hell off my property”. We did found someone there who didn’t shot us, he said that the nearest town is 50 miles “that way” but there might be a ranger station 20 miles from here. So we drove there. The station was a visitors center for some thing called “Natural Bridges”, it’s a national park. Alas, the center was closed. Luckily, there was a payphone outside.
needless to say it was dark.

After 3 hours the tow truck arrived.

After 5 hours we arrived to a hotel. In between the driver was smart enough to make a turn fast enough to tilt my bike over to the side so now I have scratches on the side that needs repair…
We stayed in a place called Blanding, a small town without anything to do, 60 miles from the place of the incident. It was the first time we stayed for more than one day in a single hotel. The reason for that was the fact that it was Saturday night and no one works on Sunday.

On Sunday me and Roi went on his bike to see yes another canyons park called canyonsland. We went there from the less attractive side but we were fed up with canyons anyway. On our way out we went to an outpost that one of the park rangers referred us to get something to eat. The place looks like the house of someone in a desolated area. They sell food, campsites and fuel. There we encountered a lady that was pretty grumpy because e we leaned on one of her planters and couldn’t open the door to their shop (restaurant, home?). After we entered we were greeted with “what do you want?” and “move your vehicle” and finally when we tried to apologize for her planters we were called “stupid”. I decided to get out of there and not give them money in exchange for food…

On Monday morning I was towed another 80 miles to the nearest motorcycle shop. Tried 2 different patches but the tire was still leaking slowly. I decided to drive on it out of Utah and into Colorado where I eventually replaced the tire…

For me Utah was too much of ‘nowhere’ with some very beautiful scenes with an emphasis on the ‘too much’.

Alot has happened in the last few days. Actually not in the last two days but before that.
Lets begin.

We saw San Francisco, it’s quite an impressive city. We entered the city from Oakland where we camped the night.

We walked around the city for a while, we took those yellow cars which I don’t remember how they’re called down to the bay area, went to pier 39 and ate at a diner nearby. The pier is very similar to TLV sea port except that they have sea lions!

After that we got tired and slept at a hotel near the airport right on top of the highway, this was a mistake – the noise was horrible but atleast the price was reasonable (relatively speaking of course).
We spent the next day in the Japanese garden in the Golden Gate park and walked around the park for a while which is very impressive and well maintained.

We also went to see “the painted ladies”, the ones from “Full House” intro. At least that’s what we think we saw. We couldn’t spot them but we did get to the area!

Riding in San Francisco is somewhat scary, we went downhill and felt like we’re about to flip over. When we went uphill, we had to burn our clutches to avoid rolling backwards. I don’t know how people get by in this city.
Anyway, riding out we just had to pass on the golden gate bridge, even though it wasn’t on our way. It’s an impressive piece of work, it’s so huge!

Our next spot was Yosemite park, we had to see those old and huge sequoia trees. We left at about 4pm which was a terrible mistake. We booked a camp site so we had a destination but we got there at around 9pm (after riding at night up the mountains and it was cold) and everything was deserted, it seems that they work there until 6 or 7. So we went several times back and forth trying to find ANYONE to talk to, we parked outside a nearby hotel and asked there. Obviously they directed us to the same place as we were before. Eventually we got to the campground, after reading the signs PROPERLY!
The time it took us to set up a camp was slightly faster than before (this was the second time). Yosemite in the morning was amazing! Such pretty sights.
We went up to the peak which is around 7500ft. It looks down at the entire valley (around 7000ft below the peak) but due to recent fires in the area, there was alot of smoke.

It’s funny, they actually allow these fire to occur and they see them as a natural rejuvenating process. When the rangers or the various people talk about it, they refer to it in a casual way like it’s no biggie.
We also went down to the valley and listened to a movie that explains the history of the area. The view from the valley was breathtaking as well.

Our next stop was the sequoia trees. These things are HUGE, I hope the picture can show that.

On ourway out, we climed some more and reached 9500ft where there was still ice! And it was cold.

We left Yosemite park heading to Las Vegas but we didn’t want to drive there in midday so we decided to drive as far and as long as we could (it was already evening) and then stop. So we reached a town called Bishop and tried to check into a motel but after trying 3 fully booked motels we decided to get something to eat and look for a campground, it was already 9pm. We found a free campground (in Google) but we just couldn’t find it and after the first time we talked to them on the phone to make sure they’re free, no one answered us. It became rather late and in an act of desperation we camped in the nearest parking lot where we saw some RVs camped, we felt pretty proud of ourselves afterwards (ofcourse at the time we were shit scarred). I think we broke new records in the time it tooks us to set the camp and fold it.

We left the area at around 4am, crossed the Sierra mountains (I wonder if that’s where the games company got their name from). We didn’t consider the fact the we will be going UP in elevation and reached ~9000ft at 6am. It was FREEZING. The gauge showed 40degs Fahrenheit.
We saw the sunrise which was beautiful. We were also pretty much alone most of the way (who is dumb enough to wake at 4am?) We finally made it through and reached the desert on our way to Vegas, 100 and something miles of straight road with nothing on it.

We reached Vegas at 10am and checked into the Luxor again, it was nice spending the day in a comfy hotel.
The next day (today) we headed out to Utah but not before seeing the Hoover dam. It’s big.

The road to Utah was HELL, I mean it. It was an average of 110degs with hot drying wind blowing. This is the last time I’m driving in midday in the desert. Next time when the temps cross the 95 mark, I’m stopping no matter where I am.

Now Utah should be fun. All the riders we come across recommended that state.
All in all I did around 2100miles in the past week and a half.
